CONCLUSIONS: About 22% of Americans use Twitter. The majority of Twitter users, around 59%, do not read the articles they retweet. Most twitter users are younger and more educated. Twitter users tend to only follow those they agree with, creating filter bubbles, or groups of people shouting into an echo chamber where everyone is essentially preaching to the choir. As a result, Twitter is not a very good way to spread your message because your message never goes beyond those who already agree with you.
My research revealed one undeniable fact, Donald Trump does not have this filter bubble problem. Trump, and likely Trump alone, has such a massive Twitter following that he can cut through the filter and reach everyone through Twitter alone. This is true because everyone in the English speaking global media, from corporate media to the lone blogger, follows Trump's Twitter. A trump Tweet goes everywhere immediately. His Tweets do not die in any bubbles.
The election implications are obvious. Trump can counter any narrative at anytime of day or night. His Twitter voice is an extremely powerful weapon. It may even fully blunt the impact of the overwhelming negative coverage he receives from legacy media. For those who have criticized Trump's use of Twitter, he has grown this voice by attaching his honest and unfiltered opinions at a moment's notice directly to the entire globe. That type of unfiltered approach has proven undeniably powerful. |
